Asphalt Paving

Asphalt Repairs become necessary for a multitude of reasons. The first step in any asphalt repair project is identifying the cause of the asphalt damage. Sometimes this is obvious, such as when tree roots have broken through the surface, or when corrosive chemicals such as hydraulic fluid have eaten away at the asphalt. Other times poor drainage has left pools of standing water which can damage the asphalt over time.

When performing asphalt repairs, first a larger area around the pothole or depression is saw-cut and removed. If the exposed base rock underneath the asphalt needs to be addressed, now is the time to base up this areas to create an even surface for the patch. Next, a coat or tack, or asphalt emulsion, is applied to the surface to ensure asphalt adhesion. Hot mix asphalt is then installed and compacted to the correct thickness then a roller is used to create a smooth transition from the new patch to the surrounding asphalt.

Asphalt Overlays and Repair

A new layer of asphalt can quickly and effectively return your parking lot or roadway to its original look. Adding thickness to your existing asphalt surfaces increases the structural integrity and adds a smooth and even finish. New asphalt can be paved directly on top of existing asphalt surfaces, and this is called an overlay. In addition, asphalt can be paved on top of a sufficient layer of compacted DOT-approved base rock. Areas that are currently grass, concrete, or paver bricks can be excavated first prior to new base rock being installed.

Asphalt Milling
The first step for any asphalt paving project is creating an ideal surface for the new asphalt. This may involve basing-up any low-lying areas or existing potholes with base rock, removing and setting aside any car stops, or cleaning the area of any detritus or debris. In addition, any transition areas may need to be milled down, and the current drainage structures may need to be adjusted to allow for the elevation change of the new layer of asphalt. Once the area has been suitably prepped, a layer of tack, or asphalt emulsion, is applied to the surface to ensure asphalt adhesion. Then, hot mix asphalt is applied in an even layer by an asphalt paving machine before being compacted with a vibratory steel-drum roller.

Asphalt Milling

Asphalt millings, also known as recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), come from previous asphalt projects that have been removed and crushed into gravel asphalt millings are cheaper and more eco-friendly than virgin asphalt, hence why more people are turning to this option, especially for residential construction. Depending on the nature of your project, asphalt millings can offer some unique benefits over traditional gravel or asphalt. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the right option for your project.
